A History of Exploration
The Toledo Zoo was founded in 1900 and has had a long history of scientific endeavors over the past 115 years. One of the most notable expeditions was the Toledo Blade-Toledo Zoo Safari to South America.
Newspaper article published upon the return of the expedition.
In 1960, the Toledo Zoo partnered with the Toledo Blade to go on an expedition to South America including Trinidad and Tobago, what was then British Guyana and the Amazon. The great safari included “Jungle” Larry Tetzlaff, Toledo Zoo director Phil Skeldon, curator of mammals Danny Danford and Toledo Blade sports editor Lou Klewer. Lou was a former Toledo Zoo director and carrier of the Explorers Club flag 160 during the expedition. The mission of the expedition was to collect animals for the zoo. When the group returned from the trip, they were greeted by thousands of people at the airport as well as people lining the roads leading to the Toledo Zoo.
The Explorers Club is an international society dedicated to the advancement of field research and the ideal that it is vital to preserve the instinct to explore. Since its inception in 1904, the Club has served as a meeting point and unifying force for explorers and scientists worldwide. The Toledo Zoo expedition in 1960 was awarded flag 160.
